Hello, firelights!

Two years ago, on a bitterly frigid day that saw most of Texas without power, I took a giant leap of faith into the deep end of a long-standing dream. I compiled a story I’d been piddling with for years and published it. Dreams became reality, a hobby became a business, and I became a boss with a self-imposed discipline, work ethic, and deadline.

Today is Old Souls, book one in the Ash Bennett series, book birthday!

Old Souls was such a labor of love, chock full of the anxiety and second-guessing I felt leading up to publishing. It’s a fledgling book for a fledgling author, and looking back, I couldn’t be prouder of it given my nay-saying internal monologue. While I’ve learned and grown as a writer in the last two years, and continue to learn and grow, I wouldn’t change a thing about that first book. It was a steppingstone toward finding myself.

Today I woke up to another ice-cold day, which seems appropriate for the birthday of this book. While I’m not particularly fond of this sort of weather, today it’s a reminder that good can come from discomfort. I wasn’t comfortable about publishing Old Souls. I wasn’t sure about putting my stories out into the ether for consumption by others. Nothing about that leap into the deep end was confident. It was more of a stuttering, stumbling hobble into the chaos of the unknown.

I’m so glad the side of me that absolutely, a thousand percent, wanted this dream triumphed over the side that wasn’t sure.

Having heard from readers how much they love Ash’s story, how well they can relate to Ash, Paul, Enya, Daer, or any of the characters, or how the story made them feel, I’m so glad Old Souls, The Nothing Place, and Lineage are out in the universe. Three more books to go!
